Sit by the restaurant in the market, sip coffee while ogling at the beautiful sea right in front, or just take a stroll at one of the beautiful parks around Ciudad Viejo area. You'll not regret it. Walking distance from the Centro, or just take a cab for few bucks. Also nice to buy some souvenirs is the pedestrian area some craftman sell their products, like selfmade jewelry for a good price. Montevideo grew extending itself over the river, and therefore it did not have to demolish much buildings to grow.
That is why the downtown area of ciudad vieja holds so many old buildings, art deco included. Too sad some of them are in desperate need of manintenance. There is a map with a suggested route to walk within Ciudad Vieja, so you can take a look at all the heritage.
I can send it to you via e-mail if you cannot find it. The perfect excuse to walk the Ciudad Vieja is to get to the Mercado del Puerto, and old iron and woood structures.
Within it, look for the Bar Roldos and try the "medio y medio", a typical local sweet wine. This is worth a visit if simply because there isn't too many things to see in Montevideo so this is interesting from the perspective that it has old buildings in a European style. We ate there but the food was not that great. Beer was tasty and the price was fair.
