A daytrip to Maha Chai Samut Sakhon province 1 year ago Save I feel like having fallen into a rabbit hole since today we visited a Thai province which according to TripAdvisor does not exist. That applies also to more than ten other provinces. We were somewhat off the tourist track since the shrine which was the main objective of the trip lacks an English name on Google Maps. It is at the river near Maha Chai pier.
It is in Chinese style and there were occasional bouts of firecracker explosions. The decorations are quite colorful. This was Wednesday around noon which may explain the limited number of visitors. I did not see any other Western tourists. Next to the shrine is a public park where people were lounging around on mats.
Some of them were fortunetellers plying their trade. The shade of trees and breeze from the river made it pretty pleasant even in the noonday heat. A couple of hundred meters east of the park was a market at least 10 hectares.
IMO it was an ordinary Thai market, i. All kinds of wares were sold: fish and seafood, vegetables, spices, clothing, crockery, whatever. Fresh, dried and salted fish and seafood may have been more prominent than elsewhere since the town is a major fishing port. The Thais in the group seemed delighted with the prices, e. I do not recall seeing any signage in English apart from the bilingual city street signs and the one tourist sign at the shrine.
We visited with a car and the traffic was not bad at all. If you are craving for authenticity it might be enough to stop at Maha Chai instead of riding all the way to the Maeklong Railway Market of fame. Report inappropriate content.
