The operation was led by the member of the mayoral committee responsible for public safety and community development, Clr Veli Mcera. Just after the briefing, officers were dispatched to different streets and houses. All houses which looked suspicious were raided and streets which are known to be infested with prostitute were cordoned off. Illegal persons were taken in for verification and questioning at Vereeniging police station. A number of houses suspected of as brothels were closed down, illegal connections of water and electricity disconnected and cables removed completely.
Some of the girls found in one of the houses explained that they were forced by their social and economic backgrounds to do prostitution here in Vereeniging. This situation of desperation forced me to be here.
This campaign today has really sent a message to the community and those who are committing crime here, that we are coming to them.
