Please refresh the page and retry. P rostitutes selling sex should be decriminalised, a Conservative party commission has recommended, but buying sex would be made illegal. They say decriminalisation of the selling of sex would enable prostitutes to leave the industry without the stigma of having been involved in an illegal trade as well as reducing exploitation and trafficking. However, there would need to be new schemes to help prostitutes quit the industry and a ban on the buying of sex to prevent women being exploited and abused by men.
T hey evidence similar models in Nordic countries, Ireland and France which have led to fewer prostitutes, less trafficking and a greater willingness by women to report violence against them. The Office of National Statistics has estimated there are about 58, women engaged in prostitution and that each of them had an average of 25 clients a week.
MP Fiona Bruce, who chairs the Commission, acknowledged the debate was polarised between those who wanted full decriminalisation or legalisation and those in favour of Nordic models.
