The author adopts an original approach to problematizing dominant mental representations about prostitution and trafficking in human beings, thus opening new avenues of thought. She argues that while one-sided definitions draw attention to particular aspects of prostitution, they also reinforce and help create simplified social representations.
In the first part of the book, she looks into prostitution from the historical perspective and analyzes contemporary policies relating to prostitution and trafficking in human beings in Slovenia and several European countries. In the second part, she gives voice to the various protagonists of prostitution β prostitutes, their clients, and managers β whose narratives reveal their views on national policies, legal restrictions and stigmatization as well as different experiences of intimate relationships.
The author analyzes the phenomenon of prostitution using an innovative approach, laying out her argument with scientific precision and demonstrating good knowledge of previous studies. Her unorthodox approach challenges certain standard procedures employed when examining this subject The text intertwines theoretical recognitions and an empirical study, where narrating about prostitution is the basis of this novel approach not yet used in Slovenia.
This chapter is in my opinion one of the most important ones, since the narration of stories enables us to rise above prejudiced opinions, judgments and knowledge What is particularly important is that these stories come from the local environment, because this confirms the existence of prostitution in Slovenia. The book thematizes the similarities and differences in prostitution regimes in two post-socialist countries in which prostitution is a tabooized and marginalized topic, both in public debate and in research.
The chapters in the book analyze the framing of prostitution in the law and public discourse, with the focus on the narratives of sex workers. The article is based on an empirical socio-legal analysis of criminal court case files concerning the abuse of prostitution in Slovenia. The paper explores how the courts define "abuse" and "exploitation" of prostitution, 1 how the p articipation of third parties in sex work activities is dealt with by the courts, how the vulnerability of sex workers is treated, and how the existence of consent is considered before the courts.
