The Met Office said high-altitude polar vortex winds β which spin around the North Pole and keep cold air trapped in the Arctic β could fall significantly next week. A knock-on effect is a weaker jet stream, which usually brings our mild westerly Atlantic breezes, therefore opening the door to Arctic air plunging towards Britain, usually about two weeks later.
