New Zealand's only elephant has departed the country via Auckland Airport en route to her new home in Adelaide, Australia, where she will join a new herd with four other elephants. The year-old Asian elephant, called Burma, had lived in Adelaide for 34 years before flying onboard an Atlas Air Boeing to start a new life in Australia. Upon landing in Adelaide, a police-escorted motorcade transported the elephant to Monarto Safari Park, the largest zoo in Australia, located around 70km from Adelaide Airport. The endeavor reportedly caused a fair bit of traffic, as the motorcade had to travel at a slow speed due to its unusual cargo. Burma will now enter a day quarantine period, supported by a team familiar to her to help with the transition.
Her new home hasn't actually been built yet, with construction on an extensive elephant habitat still underway. Burma will be the first of five elephants heading to Monarto, with the full herd scheduled to be united by the end of A zoo spokesperson said,. Burma was born in Myanmar in and arrived in Auckland in at the age of eight, where she remained until this week.
As reported by the NZ Herald , this isn't the first time Burma has been outside of Auckland Zoo's perimeter - back in , the elephant breached her electric fence by dropping a log on it, escaping into nearby Western Springs Park until she was recaptured.
