A sustainable living breakwater has been installed in the Port of Rotterdam as part of a green port project to restore an intertidal environment. The Municipality of Rotterdam, Rijkswaterstaat Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management , Boskalis and Delft-headquartered start-up Reefy are testing the Reefy artificial reef system to support nature restoration and conservation efforts in the tidal area of the river Meuse.
In this pilot project, 17 Reefy ReefBlocks were installed to test this nature-based wave barrier to protect shores from large ship waves and help preserve and restore biodiversity. This artificial reef will provide shelter for fish, such as sturgeons and European eels migrating between the Atlantic Ocean and major rivers in Europe. At 25 m long and 3 m high, the top layer will be visible during low tide. We use recycled and innovative materials for the breakwaters.
Together we will improve the nature of the river delta in Rotterdam. Rijkswaterstaat and the City of Rotterdam were looking for more sustainable solutions for keeping natural riverbanks in place and to protect them against ship waves.
