We are planning to book a trip in August to Oaxaca and stay at la Casona Oaxaca. Looks nice and clean and good reviews. Can anyone tell me if its safe or not. Enjoy The beautiful city of Oaxaca. La Casona de Tita is in a safe area. Some guy the lives in Oaxaca told me that at night after 7 pm is full of people that live in the streets and hookers. He offer us another hotel named Valop that I didnt like the idea very much. The street with prostitutes is quite a ways further down, on Zaragoza, and they are harmless.
I've wandered the streets of Oaxaca at night, and the worst thing that's happened to me was The best thing that happened to me was, twice, I stumbled across a moving street party with brassy oompah music and lots of people dancing along behind, waving tequila bottles. Of course I joined in, and both times it was an absolute hoot. There are no "Bad" areas of Oaxaca city.
It is not really like that. I also haven't heard of "dangerous" hookers attacking people. I believe that hookers are known for other, quite different, interactions with people, especially men. My mom and i just returned from aOaxaca and we had a wonderful time. People are very polite, friendly and very helpful. It is very safe. We stayed at La Casona de Tita which is located about three blocks from the zocalo area, there is some construction going some on but nothing to worry about.
We hired the services of a private guide; Oscar Barrita, very knowledgeable, professional. Picked up us at the hotel and visited lots of places, the ruins of Mitla and Monte Alban , mezcalerias, artisans workshops, etc.
His services are very, very reasonable. In all, the whole trip was a wonderful experience. I was just robbed by a pick pocket recently walking on the sidewalk outside the mercado. She got my wallet with cash, 3 credit cards and bus ticket to puerto escondido.
