Ian Barnett, 56, of Ingledene Avenue, Broughton Park, had earlier pleaded guilty to keeping brothels at Shudehill in Manchester, Stockport Road, Levenshulme, and Cheetham Hill between and ; keeping a brothel called Angels in Altrincham in ; controlling prostitution in relation to a woman who had been trafficked into this country from Lithuania and conspiracy to control a string of brothels between and the beginning of Sentencing him at Manchester Crown Court, Judge Anthony Ensor said: "Your persistent offending makes this case one of considerable gravity.
He added: "I am satisfied that you are an avaricious and callous individual. It was greed which motivated you to continue to run the business after you were initially arrested and sentenced as amply demonstrated by your keen monitoring of the trade of these brothels. This was a vile trade undertaken by an evil and immoral man.
He said that although there was no evidence Barnett had been involved in the trafficking of a Lithuanian woman employed in one of his brothels, the premises had "afforded people traffickers the opportunity to place those foreign women to work. The woman, who cannot be named, spent three days at the brothel before being rescued by police, following a tip-off, on July 31, Ms Landale said there were 12 other foreign girls who were suspected of being trafficked but this was never proved.
