The hellhole jail that awaits Laura Plummer is home to some of Egypt's most dangerous prisoners - and is run by prison guards accused of torture and horrifying neglect. On Christmas Day Miss Plummer, 33, was jailed for smuggling drugs after she was found with Tramadol tablets in October. Now her family say she is about to be transferred to the hellish Qena prison to begin her three-year sentence after spending custody inside a squalid jail cell with 25 other prisoners.
Miss Plummer's family fear 'she will not survive' in the prison, which is home jihadists, rapists and murderers. Prisoners are housed in cramped squalid conditions, cut off from the outside world and shackled to bare concrete walls. Ruthless guards hand out regular punishments by locking inmates up in solitary confinement in complete darkness and taking their bedding during the winter. Dozens of inmates are on death row, kept apart from the general population and forced to wear red jump suits so they can be well identified while others wear all white uniforms.
Human rights groups say inmates include some of the top leadership of the Muslim Brotherhood, who are kept alongside alleged members of the extremist group Islamic State, also known as ISIS.
The maximum visits will be one a fortnight and relatives have to pay for all food for the prisoner. Observers have told how most inmates lose a dramatic amount of weight, become withdrawn and depressed.
