Lionel Oust, Assistant in the Department of Prints and Drawings, is the first of a complete Index which it is proposed to issue to the names of all the artists whose works are represented in the collections of that Department. The system adopted in the Index corresponds strictly to that which is carried out in the practical arrangement of the collections themselves. That is to say, the works of all artists are divided in the first instance according to schools using the word school as equivalent to nationality : within each school or nationality the names of all the artists belonging to it are arranged in alphabetical order : and under the name of each artist are specified the several classes of work by which he is represented, β original works by his own hand coming first, and those executed by other hands after Iris designs following.
