Prostitution is legal in Denmark, however pimping and brothels are not. Sex work is not a recognized profession and therefore prostitutes do not receive employee benefits, however, they still pay taxes. The red light district in Copenhagen is unique because it is a parallel between two different worlds.
In one world is a modern area with high real estate prices, designer shops, and a church. In the other world lies prostitution, sex shops, and nude clubs. My class and I went there early in the evening because DIS policy does not allow field studies to go past 11pm, so the second world was not quite as transparent as it might have been at 2am. As we walked around it was hard for me to tell who might be a prostitute, a client, or just a person on their way to dinner.
It all seemed so normal. One street was the pick-up and drop off street. On this street it was easy to tell who was a prostitute because the women were waiting by the cars for clients. After everything I have learned so far in my human trafficking class, I imagine that most of these prostitutes may have been there by force. I wondered what they were thinking as they saw us walk by.
