I am a department manager in a major regional grocery store in our area. It is that crazy time when buying a roll of toilet paper might require a bank loan.
Today, the store has finally gotten some toilet paper in to stock the shelves with. About mid-morning, a young lady is lucky enough to snag the last package on the shelf. She puts it in her cart and continues shopping. She turns to choose an item from several options on the shelf, and as soon as she does, some guy swoops in, takes her cart, and takes off toward the front of the store!
This guy does not slow down one bit but just yells back before turning the corner:. I need it more. The young lady is frozen in shock and disbelief. That toilet paper is plain gone. I call my team together. Another of them retrieves a couple of the packages of toilet paper we had reserved for ourselves. I call the customer over. Could you please come over to my department?
Because of the nature of my department, I have a register here and can ring customers up. The customer agreed and left rapidly. My team shared the remaining packages, and at no time during the shortages did any of us run out of toilet paper.
Back during the mask mandate, I worked in one of the big brand jewelry stores commonly found in shopping malls. On this boring day, it was only my assistant manager and me working.
