As the creator of Sex and the City, Darren Star knows how to deliver a show about fashionable women in a fabulous location and he is true to form with Netflix series Emily In Paris. Landing on our screens at a time when jetting to foreign cities is no longer as simple as it once was, the comedy-drama transports viewers into the heart of Paris for lots of fashion, romance and culture-clash laughs.
Lily Collins leads the show as ambitious twenty-something marketing executive Emily, who finds herself leaving a happy life in Chicago to take on a dream job in Paris after her company acquires a French luxury marketing company.
On top of that, she has to manage her love life, make new friends, and navigate some very surprising twists and turns. The series happily plays on the tropes of the French being set in their ways and not wanting help from the bubbly young American trying to make them leap into the digital age like the US.
Elsewhere, Emily soon finds herself in quite a few entanglements in her personal life thanks to the handsome French men that pop up along her path. Lucas Bravo is perfectly cast as the charming Gabriel as his palpable chemistry with Collins leaves fans torn over what outcome they hope to play out. The show is the perfect antidote to everything going on in the real world right now, a throwback to the golden age of early noughties rom-coms and feel-good TV.
While it covers serious feminist themes such as workspace sexism and how the male gaze shapes in society, it does so with a light tough that matches the playful nature of the show. By the end of the series, most viewers will be desperate to book a flight and start their own Parisian adventure. Follow Metro.
