When I first heard about a place in Kampala where bars operate 24 hours, traffic is immortal and prostitutes ply their trade freely, I rubbished the news immediately. It sounded like one of those wishful thoughts that Ugandans come up with to forget their troubles. But Kabalagala is for real.
It erupts into life mainly at night. Bars are strewn all over the place, roadside restaurants doing brisk business, and loud music coming from right about everywhere blends with the rattling sound of moving traffic to lend an impression of a confused picnic.
By 9pm, Kabalagala is a hive of activity. Pubs teem with revellers of different social standings, discussing and arguing over politics, sports and sex. Some male patrons who enjoy the cold breeze outside also take delight in abusing reckless drivers and flirting with female passers-by.
By any standard, the heart of Kabalagala is a business complex. Its business is monopolised by bars, restaurants, nightclubs and brothels. One can get a headache trying to locate a residential structure in the not so expansive neighbourhood.
